Eight children have been killed in a mass shooting in Shreveport, a city in Louisiana, on Sunday, police said, in what officials are describing as a domestic incident. Authorities said officers were first called to reports of gunfire shortly after 06:00 local time on Sunday. Speaking at a morning press conference, Shreveport Police Department spokesman Christopher Bordelon confirmed that the victims were between one and 14 years old.

Two other people were injured in the attack. Police said the suspect fled the scene after allegedly stealing a vehicle. He was later fatally shot by officers following a pursuit that continued into neighbouring Bossier Parish.

Investigators are examining multiple crime scenes across three residential locations. Some of the children were believed to be related to the suspect, Police Chief Wayne Smith told the Associated Press. Police also informed that the suspected gunman was shot dead at a separate scene in nearby Bossier Parish.

"This is an extensive scene unlike anything most of us have ever seen," Smith said. Officials said a motive has not yet been established, but described the incident as stemming from a domestic disturbance. Louisiana State Police have appealed for anyone with information, images or video to come forward as the investigation continues.

Authorities have also identified at least two additional related crime scenes: one roughly a quarter of a mile away on Harrison Street between Wallace Avenue and Bernstein Avenue, and another in Bossier Parish on Brompton Lane near Long Acre Drive. At around 09:30 local time, officials said at least 30 police units remained at the original scene as investigations continued.
