Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and actor Pawan Kalyan underwent the Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, or FESS, according to news reports. This minimally invasive procedure is commonly used to treat chronic sinus conditions that do not respond to medication. While the doctors have advised him to take ten days' rest, Kalyan’s wife, Anna Lezhneva, has reassured fans that the 54-year-old is doing well.
According to experts, for FESS to be successful, an early diagnosis and timely treatment significantly help improve quality of life and prevent long-term complications.
FESS is an advanced surgical technique used to treat chronic sinusitis, nasal blockages, and inflammation. It involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera, which is known as an endoscope, through the nostrils. This allows surgeons to view the sinus passages in detail and remove obstructions without making any external cuts.
The goal of FESS is to restore normal sinus drainage, improve airflow, and reduce recurring infections. Because it is performed through the nasal passages, it is considered a scarless and minimally invasive sinus surgery.
FESS is typically recommended when patients experience persistent sinus issues that do not improve with medication, such as:

During the procedure, surgeons use an endoscope to get a magnified view of the sinuses. Specialized instruments are then used to remove inflamed tissue, polyps, or other blockages. This helps open up the sinus passages and allows mucus to drain properly.
The surgery is usually performed under local or general anesthesia and is known for its precision and minimal tissue damage.
FESS has become a preferred treatment option due to several advantages, which include no external incisions or visible scars, less or almost no pain, and significantly reduced bleeding, faster recovery time, improved breathing and sinus function, and lower risk of complications.
Most patients can resume daily activities within a few days, although full recovery may take a couple of weeks.
