In the middle of a high-voltage campaign for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a brief pause from political rallies for an unexpected street-side moment in Jhargram. Amid a packed schedule, the Prime Minister was seen enjoying the iconic Bengali snackjhalmuri, offering a lighter glimpse into his otherwise intense campaign trail.
Photos and videos of the moment were shared on X on Prime Minister's official account. The post was captioned, “In between four rallies across West Bengal on a packed Sunday, had some delicious Jhalmuri in Jhargram.”
During the stop, PM Modi interacted with locals at a roadside stall, smiling and engaging with people, creating a candid moment away from the usual political atmosphere. In one video, PM Modi can be seen approaching a street vendor selling jhalmuri and saying, “Bhaiya, humein apna jhalmuri khilao.” (“Brother, please let me have some of your jhalmuri.”) He then asks the vendor, “Kitne ka hota hai aapka jhalmuri?” (“How much does your jhalmuri cost?”). As the Prime Minister tries to hand over the money, the vendor initially refuses, but PM Modi insists, and their light-hearted interaction continues.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in his speeches. Addressing a Vijay Sankalp Sabha in Medinipur, he accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of widespread corruption and poor governance. “In 15 years, they have earned a PhD in looting,” PM Modi said while addressing the crowd.
He added, “Under the TMC's ruthless government, there's loot in recruiting school teachers. Loot in children's mid-day meals. Loot in MNREGA work. Loot in money meant for the poor's homes. Loot in village roads. Loot in cyclone relief funds. In 15 years, they've earned a PhD in looting.''
Escalating his criticism, the Prime Minister described the TMC’s tenure as “maha jungle raj,” alleging it was marked by “riots, political murders, increased infiltrators and atrocities against women.”
Positioning the BJP as a strong alternative, he assured voters that “aggressors and looters” would be dealt with and promised better employment opportunities for the youth.
Moreover, while addressing another rally in Bishnupur, PM Modi issued a stern warning to alleged corrupt elements. “I am giving one last chance to all TMC goons, syndicates, and corrupt elements. Surrender at your nearest police station before April 29. No one will be spared after May 4. The mafia of Bishnupur and TMC's syndicate, listen carefully, this will no longer be tolerated.”
The developments come ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting set for May 4.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking a fourth consecutive term, while the BJP, which won 77 seats in the previous election, is intensifying efforts to form the government in the state.
