The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a major change in the way board exam answer sheets are evaluated with the rollout of the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. The system is being implemented for Class 12 board examinations from 2026. While students will continue to write their exams in the traditional pen-and-paper format, the evaluation of answer sheets will now take place through a digital process.
The reform is part of CBSE’s effort to modernise examination evaluation, improve accuracy in marking, and reduce delays in result processing. Given the scale of board examinations, which involve evaluation of millions of answer sheets every year, the shift is aimed at making the system more efficient and standardised.
On-Screen Marking is a digital evaluation method in which answer sheets are scanned after the examination and converted into digital copies. These scanned scripts are then uploaded to a secure CBSE evaluation portal, where examiners assess them on computer screens instead of physical papers.
The system assigns answer scripts to examiners through a controlled digital workflow. Teachers log in with authorised credentials and evaluate responses displayed on screen. Marks are entered directly into the system against each question, and totals are calculated automatically.
Although the evaluation process becomes digital, the original answer sheets remain the source documents used for scanning and verification.
After the examination is conducted in the usual manner, answer sheets are collected and transported to designated scanning centres. Each page is digitised into high-resolution images to ensure clarity of handwritten responses, diagrams and rough work.
These scanned copies are uploaded to CBSE’s secure evaluation platform. The system then randomly allocates scripts to trained examiners. Evaluators access the assigned answer sheets through a digital interface that allows navigation, zooming and page-wise viewing.
Marks are awarded directly on screen for each question. The system automatically calculates total scores, reducing the need for manual addition and lowering the chances of arithmetic errors. The platform also enables monitoring of evaluation progress in real time.
CBSE has introduced On-Screen Marking to streamline the evaluation process and address challenges associated with large-scale manual checking. Traditional evaluation methods often involve logistical delays due to physical handling, distribution and collection of answer sheets across centres.
The digital system is designed to improve speed, ensure uniformity in marking, and reduce discrepancies in evaluation. Since all examiners assess digitised copies through the same interface, the board aims to bring greater consistency to the marking process.
