Milestones have a way of stopping us in our tracks, reminding us not just of the passage of time but forcing us to think about how it was spent. They help us see how what felt like a series of small steps became something much bigger over time.
April marks 50 years since I opened a flower shop. My first reaction to the anniversary was disbelief — where did the time go? That quickly gave way to gratitude for what 1-800-Flowers.com has become, and for everyone who helped get us there.
Back in 1976, I was a social worker at St. John’s Home for Boys, working at a bar to make ends meet and looking for business opportunities. One night, a regular stopped in the bar and mentioned he was selling the flower shop across the street. I felt a tingle.
Since my time at St. John’s had already taught me how much connection matters, I figured flowers offered a simple way to help people show that.
The idea that I was in the relationship business was never far from my mind. My first store on Manhattan’s Upper East Side didn’t just sell flowers, we were a place where people could stop by, ask for advice and reflect on why they needed flowers.
The company’s growth was built on making it easier for people to express themselves. The single store became a regional chain. Then we acquired a toll-free number, and all of a sudden we were a national retailer. Then we plugged into the internet, social media, and smartphones. Each step was an opportunity to offer greater convenience.
As I look back, what I feel most is gratitude — the same feeling behind so many of the moments we’ve been honored to be part of over the years.
Above all, I’m grateful for our customers, who invite us into their most meaningful moments. That trust is something we work to honor every day — and it remains the foundation for everything we hope to build in the years ahead.
