Riverhead’s hometown hero banners honoring veterans are going up in three of the town’s hamlet centers in advance of the Memorial Day holiday.

Members of the Riverhead Town Veterans Advisory Committee and members of the Rotary Club of Riverhead hung the banners from streetlights in downtown Riverhead Saturday. Banners will also be displayed on lightpoles in Jamesport and Wading River.

The hometown hero banner program, spearheaded by the Veterans Advisory Committee and the Riverhead Business Improvement District, waslaunched in April 2021, with an initial batch of 29 banners, depicting the images, names and branches of service of local veterans.

The banner program has grown dramatically since then, “which is wonderful,” said Council Member Ken Rothwel, who serves as the Town Board Liaison to the committee. There are currently a total of 155 banners, he said.

Banners were scheduled to be hung in Jamesport today, “weather permitting,” Rothwell said.

Help with hanging the banners is always welcome, he said.

“The Veterans Advisory Committee really appreciates that Rotary has stepped up to help put the banners up and take them down, Rothwell said.

Orders for hometown hero banners are still being taken. For more information, visit theVeterans Advisory Committee pageon the town’s website.
