A 48-year-old man allegedly killed his 11-year-old twin daughters at his home in Kanpur early Sunday morning. The accused, identified as Shashi Ranjan Mishra, was arrested at the spot after police received a call about the incident around 4:30 am. The incident took place at a flat in Kidwai Nagar area, where Mishra lived with his wife, two daughters and a six-year-old son. Police said the girls were found lying in a pool of blood inside the house.

Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal said, "A police response vehicle (PRV) received a call around 4.30 am about the murder of twin sisters. On reaching the flat, the PRV personnel found both girls lying dead in a pool of blood, while the accused was present inside."

Police said the accused himself informed them about the incident. He was detained immediately and is being questioned.

"Prima facie, the father appears to be mentally disturbed. Further investigation is underway," Lal said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary said initial findings suggest the girls were attacked while they were asleep. The exact reason behind the crime is still not known.

Forensic teams have examined the crime scene and collected evidence. A sniffer dog squad was also called in. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Police are also trying to understand the sequence of events inside the house, including how the mother came to know about the incident. She is currently in shock and has not been questioned yet. CCTV footage from the area is also being checked.
