Mumbai Lift Freefall:A lift collapsed at a residential building in Mumbai on Wednesday (February 12), which left five people injured at the time. The incident took place at Jay Krupa Tower in Byculla East at around 9 pm. It has triggered panic among residents over safety. Officials explains that the lift fell from the fourth floor after a cable reportedly snapped, causing it to drop suddenly with five occupants on board.

Following this, the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, ambulance services, BMC ward staff and even local residents rushed to the site to assist the people trapped inside. They carefully pulled out the occupants in the lift and sent them to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.

Assistant Divisional Fire Officer (ADFO) V N Sangle confirmed the incident and the operation carried out by rescue teams. He stated, "The incident took place around 9 pm, and the lift collapsed from the fourth floor. Five people have been admitted to the hospital," reported the news agency ANI.

Authorities have begun examining the site to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure. The initial reports suggest a cable malfunction. Based on that, officials are conducting thorough inspection of the lift system and the building’s maintenance records as part of the ongoing investigation.

A similar incident occurred a few months after ago. In May 2025, a man died when a car parking lift collapsed in a 21-storey residential building in Borivali West. The accident took place at around 11 am at Prathamesh Building on Link Road, the Mumbai Fire Brigade said. Officials said the car lift suddenly fell into a pit about seven metres deep, and two men were trapped inside.

Following the incident, firefighters reached the spot quickly to conduct a rescue operation. The two men, Shubham Madamlal Dhuri (30) and Sunjeet Yadav (45), were taken out of the pit and rushed to Shatabdi Hospital, which is run by the BMC. However, Dhuri succumbed to his injuries before arriving the hospital.
