After the much-heated debate surrounding theex-Army chief’s unpublished book, statements from all sides have sent social media into a spiral of confusion. What began as speculation over the contents of the manuscript has now turned into a larger controversy about its very existence in the public domain. While multiple users on X (formerly Twitter), Reddit threads, and WhatsApp groups have been circulating what they claim is a PDF version of the book, the publisher has firmly denied any official release.

In its latest statement, Penguin Random House posted on X, “No copies of ex-Army chief's unapproved book published or sold.” The post was promptly reshared by former Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane with the caption, “This is the status of the book,” reinforcing the publisher’s stance. The message is clear: the book has neither been formally published nor released in any format—physical, digital, e-book, or otherwise.

Adding another layer to the confusion is an old social media post by General Naravane dated December 15, 2023. In the resurfaced tweet, he wrote: “Hello, friends. My book is available now. Just follow the link. Happy reading. Jai Hind.” The post was accompanied by a link shared by Penguin Random House India directing readers to an Amazon pre-order page.

However, within 24 hours of the first announcement, Penguin India issued another one as a clarification to this old tweet, explaining the distinction between a pre-order listing and an official publication. In a follow-up post, the publisher elaborated on how the publishing process works—clarifying that a book being available for pre-order does not equate to it being printed, distributed, or formally released. Pre-order listings are often created ahead of publication as part of marketing and distribution planning.

This clarification now appears especially significant in light of the current controversy. While the pre-order link once existed, it does not contradict the present claim that the book has not been published or sold. The resurfaced December 2023 tweet, therefore, reflects an earlier stage in the publishing timeline rather than proof of an official release.
As things stand, the publisher maintains that the book remains unpublished. At the same time, the unauthorized PDF—bearing a clear “Not for circulation” watermark—continues to be downloaded and shared widely. Whether this version is a leaked advance copy, a draft manuscript, or something else entirely is still uncertain.
