Kolkata:The Enforcement Directorate on Sunday carried out searches at the premises of a senior Kolkata Police officer and another individual as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation linked to an alleged criminal syndicate in poll-bound West Bengal. Officials said the action was taken under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and is connected to a case involving a wanted accused with multiple serious charges.

Searches were conducted at two premises linked to Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas, including his residence in Ballygunge, along with a location associated with Joy Kamdar, Managing Director of Sun Enterprise. The raids are part of a wider probe into alleged financial irregularities tied to a criminal network operating in the state.

The case centres on Biswajit Podder alias Sona Pappu, who faces multiple charges including attempted murder and extortion. The Enforcement Directorate said the accused and his associates were allegedly involved in organised syndicate operations, generating illegal funds through various activities.

The federal agency had earlier conducted searches in the case on April 1, during which it seized cash worth Rs 1.47 crore, along with gold jewellery and silver valued at Rs 67.64 lakh. A country made revolver was also recovered from one of the premises.

The investigation originates from a Kolkata Police FIR against Podder, which includes charges of rioting, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and violations under the Arms Act. Podder is also wanted in connection with a violence case on Kankulia Road near Golpark and is currently absconding.

Officials said summons have been issued to Podder, but he has not yet joined the investigation. The ED is continuing its probe to trace financial links, identify other individuals connected to the syndicate and establish the full extent of the alleged money laundering network.
