Chairman of selectors,Ajit Agarkar, is all set to get a contract extension till June 2027 when his tenure ends in June this year. With the ODI World Cup lined up next year, theBCCIis keen to continue with Agarkar, given that the selectors, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, have yet to complete a year in their jobs. Under Agarkar, India won three ICC trophies - the T20 World Cup 2024, ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and the T20 World Cup 2026. The team also reached the final of the 2023 World Cup, where they lost to Australia in the final.

Under Agarkar’s tenure, the team had a seamless transition and was fearless in taking bold decisions. The board felt he should continue. The BCCI officer bearers will be speaking to him on the sidelines of IPL games to update him,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Agarkar also picked new captains for the Indian cricket team, with Shubman Gill named the Test and ODI captain, and Suryakumar Yadav getting the leadership reins of the T20I team. Hardik Pandya was the frontrunner to lead the T20I team, but Agarkar pushed Suryakumar Yadav's case, saying he wants someone who can play all games, highlighting Hardik's fitness concerns.

“One of the main issues discussed was that you want a captain who’s likely to play all the games,” he said. “We think he is a deserving candidate.”

Similarly, the committee recalled Ishan Kishan, who had been out of the team since 2023, for the T20 World Cup 2026. They kept a close eye on him during the domestic season, where he scored heavily and got his place in the team. He was even included in the World Cup squad, ahead of Yashavi Jaiswal and Jitesh Sharma.
