In the weeks leading up to his death, Van Der Beek left behind a series of pictures and videos that now serve as a quiet record of how he chose to spend his last days.

Van Der Beek was first diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023 but kept the news private for more than a year. He publicly revealed his Stage 3 diagnosis in November 2024, later telling NBC's Today show in December 2025 that the experience had reshaped his outlook.

He described the diagnosis as a turning point that pushed him to re-evaluate how he spent his time. According to his interviews, he focused on slowing down and being present with his wife and their six children.
