Several people were shot dead in Kyiv on Saturday after a gunman opened fire and took hostages in a supermarket. Ukrainian police said the gunman was also shot dead later in a gunfight. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said special tactical units stormed the store after attempts to negotiate with the attacker failed. "The shooter in Kyiv was liquidated during the arrest," Klymenko said in a statement on Telegram. He added that the gunman had taken hostages and opened fire at a police officer during the operation.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least five people had been killed in the incident.

The shooting took place in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, according to the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko. Klymenko said the exact number of casualties was still being clarified. Klitschko had earlier reported that two people were killed, but later indicated that there were additional fatalities inside the supermarket.

Authorities said around 10 people were being treated in hospital, while five others sustained injuries. Officials added that negotiators had initially tried to make contact with the gunman before police moved in.
