Wanting to add extra salt may seem harmless, but according to a new study, your daily sodium intake could quietly impact your brain health. Research published in the journalNeurobiology of Ageinghas found a potential link between high salt consumption and worsening memory, raising fresh concerns about diet and cognitive decline.

According to researchers, higher sodium intake is associated with a decline in episodic memory, the type of memory responsible for recalling personal experiences, such as where you parked your car or important life events.

The study tracked over 1,200 adults for six years, monitoring their salt intake and cognitive performance. Brain function was tested every 18 months using detailed cognitive assessments. The results revealed a clear pattern - men who consumed more sodium experienced faster memory decline, particularly in recalling past events.

Interestingly, the same effect was not observed in women, suggesting there may be sex-specific biological differences in how sodium impacts the brain.

Even though the study does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, scientists believe several mechanisms may explain the connection between salt intake and cognitive decline:

The findings add to growing evidence that diet plays a critical role in long-term brain health. Researchers suggest that reducing sodium intake could become an important lifestyle strategy to delay or prevent conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. However, experts emphasize that more research is needed to fully understand why sodium affects men and women differently and to confirm the biological mechanisms involved.

Alzheimer’s arises from the abnormal accumulation of amyloid-beta proteins or plaques and tau proteins – known as tangles, which block communication between neurons and cause them to die. It often starts in the hippocampus, impacting memory first.

Health guidelines recommend limiting sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day, around one teaspoon of salt. But many people unknowingly exceed this limit through everyday foods. Here’s how quickly sodium adds up:
