Male shooter in Canada keeps using female pronouns after deadly attack
An 18-year-old male with a documented history of mental health issues has been identified as the suspect in a deadly school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, an attack that has shaken Canada and reignited debates about violence, mental health, gender identity, and public safety.
The rampage left at least nine to ten people dead, including the suspect, and injured dozens more in one of the deadliest school shootings in the country’s history.
The shooting unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and at a nearby residence in this remote mountain community in northeastern British Columbia.
Authorities say an active shooter alert was issued in the mid-afternoon, urging residents in Tumbler Ridge and surrounding areas to shelter in place as officers responded to reports of gunfire at the school.
Police later confirmed that multiple people were shot inside the school building, where the scene was described as chaotic and traumatic for students, staff, and first responders.
When officers entered the school, they found several victims and eventually located the suspected shooter, who was dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Additional victims were found at a local residence that investigators say is linked to the suspect, extending the tragedy beyond the school grounds.
By the time the lockdown was lifted and the immediate threat declared over, the toll was staggering for a small community: several children, a teacher, and family members of the suspect were among the dead, with many others wounded or traumatized.
Officials have called the massacre one of the rare but deadliest acts of mass violence Canada has seen in recent years.
