A 24-year-old monk is presumed dead after going vanishing from a seculded island monastery.
Justin Evans, known as Brother Ignatius, disappeared from the Golgotha Monastery on Papa Stronsay, a remote island north of Orkney.
He was part of the traditionalist Catholic order, the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer, which was ordered to leave the Diocese of Aberdeen in July 2024 after an investigation into allegations of abuse and unauthorised exorcisms.
When he disappeared, Brother Ignatius, originally from New Zealand, was wearing his characteristic white robe.
He is now presumed dead after searches by police, the Coastguard and specialist units failed to locate him.
Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the disappearance.
Inspector David Hall said: ‘Our thoughts are very much with Justin’s family at what is a very difficult time.
‘Extensive and detailed searches using local police resources and partner agencies have been carried out on the islands of Papa Stronsay and Stronsay, including along the shorelines.
‘Coastal areas on other nearby islands will continue to be searched by local and specialist police resources and partners.’
The Diocese of Aberdeen expressed sadness at the ‘disappearance and presumed death’ of Brother Ignatius, who was described as being known for ‘humility and charity’.
