Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday hit out at the opposition, saying that "if we cannot give this right to the women of our country, then we will have to think where we are standing". Speaking at Times Now Conclave 'Unlocking Nari Shakti' in conversation with group Editor-in-Chief Navika Kumar, she also blamed opposition of repeatedly delaying the passage of the women’s reservation bill.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said the bill has faced hurdles for decades despite being introduced as early as 1992. “I have seen that in so many years whenever this bill came it started in 1992. Whenever it came, it was put on hold many times. It was rejected many times. Many times those pages were torn. Sometimes for one reason, sometimes for another.”
She alleged that across political parties, a narrative had been built to prevent the bill from being passed.
“But this bill should not pass. People of different political parties have created this kind of view. And it is happening even today.”
Meanwhile, she also stressed that even after decades of independence, women were still underrepresented in decision-making bodies.
“Today, while talking about delimitation, while talking about reservation, while talking about quota in quota, for some reason, I feel that why is this bill being prepared to be put on hold. While this is the right of the women of this country. Even after 78 years of independence, if we cannot give this right to the women of our country, then we will have to think where we are standing, " Gupta added.
She cited key decisions taken by the central government to argue that reforms take time and face criticism at every stage.
“At that time if they would have brought the bill they would have said that the government has been formed they have to bring the bill, the development work is still pending just now they had said that we will remove 370 they are not paying attention to that when they removed 370 they said when will you make the Ram Mandir you will not tell the date so the Mandir was made.”
“In this short span of 10 years the Modi government has taken thousands of decisions which were necessary for the development of this country and in those decisions one decision is that half of the population of the country has to be given their rights.”
