Islamabad:Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday expressed concerns about the “inhumane treatment" of his wife, Bushra Bibi, in jail. Slamming the judiciary of his country,Khansaid that judges have "sold their souls." He also reportedly alleged that Pakistani authorities are blackmailing him using his wife's name.

"The judges in this country should be ashamed of themselves. Time and again, we have approached the judiciary, but they have sold their souls for personal gain. They know they cannot break me, so they turn to my wife. How can they allow this inhumane treatment of Bushra Bibi simply to blackmail me?" Khan said, as quoted by The Independent.

Disclosing details about Bushra Bibi's condition in the prison, the former Pakistan PM said that his wife is being kept in complete isolation. He claimed that Bushra Bibi is allowed to meet him for only 30 minutes in a week and that sometimes the meeting is also denied. As per the media house, Khan made these remarks during a phone call with one of his sons, Kasim Khan, on the occasion of Eid.

Last month reports surfaced that Khan had only 15 percent vision left in his right eye after the alleged failure of prison authorities to take action. His lawyer, Salman Safdar, who was permitted to visit him last month, said the cricketer-turned-politician had started experiencing blurred and hazy vision, reported BBC.

Last year in December, Khan, 73, and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced on Saturday to 17 years' imprisonment each in the Toshakhana 2 case. The verdict was delivered by a special court set up inside Rawalpindi's high-security Adiala Jail, where Khan has been held since August 2023.

The Toshakhana 2 case relates to alleged fraud involving state gifts received by Khan and his wife from the Saudi government in 2021.

Toshakhana is a department under Pakistan's cabinet division that stores gifts presented to rulers and government officials by foreign dignitaries. Such gifts can be bought back under prescribed rules.

The case, filed in July 2024, is based on allegations that valuable items, including expensive watches and diamond and gold jewellery sets, were sold without first being deposited, the report said. Bibi was granted bail by the Islamabad High Court in October 2024, while Khan was granted bail in the same case a month later. Notably, they were already incarcerated in the Adiala Jail following earlier convictions in the Al-Qadir Trust case.
