New Delhi:In a landmark verdict towards gender equality in the Indian armed forces, the Supreme Court on Tuesday (March 24) granted permanent commission for Short Service Commission (SSC) women officers. The judgment was passed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Ujjal Bhuyan, and N Kotiswar Singh while hearing a plea against the denial of permanent commission to women SSC officers.

During the hearing, the Centre dismissed the allegation of discrimination and bias in the grant of permanent commission to SSC women officers serving in the Indian Air Force, reported PTI. It stated that 243 men and 177 women were inducted since 2019. The top court observed that women officers in the defense forces underwent inequitable evaluation processes.
