In a tale that could rival any Hollywood blockbuster, a group of seven dogs in China pulled off an astonishing escape after reportedly being kidnapped by thieves linked to a dog meat shop. Snatched from their homes and facing a grim fate, the dogs managed to outwit their captors and make their way back to safety. A video capturing the daring journey shows a corgi leading the pack, followed closely by a German shepherd and other canine companions, and it quickly went viral on social media.
An individual surnamed Lu captured the remarkable scene along a busy highway in Changchun, China, as per the report by theSouth China Morning Post. As he filmed, Lu tried to guide the dogs to safety, but the determined group stayed on their chosen path. He then posted the video on Chinese social media platform Douyin, appealing to local authorities for assistance.
He told local media, “They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison, nothing like stray dogs,'' as quoted by SCMP.
The footage shows the dogs walking together along the roadside. A corgi leads the group, frequently glancing back, while a limping German shepherd ensures no one is left behind. The ensemble also includes Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Pekingese.
Local animal welfare group Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base told SCMP that the dogs likely come from the same village. The organisation suggested that because the animals roam freely together, they have formed strong bonds. After the video gained attention, the group deployed drones to track the dogs and guide them safely home.
Though the exact circumstances of the escape remain unclear, a volunteer speculated that the dogs may have fled from a truck used to transport them for a dog meat shop. Lu encountered the group roughly 17 kilometres from their village.
In the end, the dogs were reunited with their owners. “We are so lucky they came back, not to be eaten,” said the owner of a German shepherd and a Golden Retriever. Another owner praised the corgi’s intelligence and bravery.
While Chinese law does not explicitly ban dog meat consumption, Shenzhen prohibited the sale of dog and cat meat in 2020. Nonetheless, some restaurants continue to serve dog meat, particularly during winter months, the report added.
