Richard L. Gibbs of Cutchogue died March 17, 2026. He was 91 years old.
Born and raised on Main Street in Greenport, he spent his life on the North Fork, except for a three-year period when he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Known to many as Capt. Gibbs, he worked on the Plum Island Ferry for 45 years, starting as a deckhand and working his way up to captain. In 1956, he met Carole at the roller rink, and they were married for 17 years and raised three children. He later met Anita Fiore and expanded his family to include her two daughters.
He is survived by his children, Rick, Dawn and Kim; his stepdaughters, Cheryl and Danielle; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, March 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where a brief service will be held.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion in Greenport (Burton Potter Post 185).
