Roslyn Middle School students brought energy, humor and heart to the stage in their recent production of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical Jr.,” presented by RMS Spotlight from March 5-8.
Directed by Julianna DeAngelis, with musical direction by Brian Villegas, the production featured a cast and crew of middle school performers who spent months rehearsing the fast-paced musical, known for its clever lyrics, dynamic choreography and uplifting message about courage and standing up for what is right.
Davin Buna starred as Matilda Wormwood, alongside Jaeli Buna as Miss Honey and Siobhan Cavanagh as the formidable Agatha Trunchbull. Other featured roles included Joshua Zendejas as Mr. Wormwood and Rileigh Williams as Mrs. Wormwood. The production also highlighted dozens of student performers portraying the spirited students of Crunchem Hall. Behind the scenes, a student crew supported the production with stage management, technical work and set preparation.
The show’s musical numbers, written by Tim Minchin, with a book by Dennis Kelly and based on the novel by Roald Dahl, challenged students with intricate harmonies, rapid-fire lyrics and expressive storytelling.
“Through hours of rehearsal and challenging material, this cast embodied Matilda’s determination, optimism and creativity,” director Julianna DeAngelis said. “It was inspiring to watch these students support one another, grow as performers and bring this story to life.”
With its message that even the smallest voices can make a big difference, “Matilda Jr.” provided a showcase of the creativity, collaboration and talent of Roslyn Middle School students.
