**CHICAGO** — A Loyola University Chicago student was wounded in a shooting near the 1045 W. Pratt Blvd. beach late Thursday evening, marking another violent incident in a city struggling to contain surging crime rates.

Chicago Police reported that officers responded to the scene shortly after the incident occurred. Upon arrival, they discovered a victim—identified by university officials as a currently enrolled student—suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. As of Friday afternoon, the individual's status remains under investigation by medical personnel.

The Rogers Park lakefront, an area frequently populated by students and local residents, was swarmed by law enforcement as investigators canvassed the area for shell casings and potential witnesses. The shooting has sent a shockwave through the Loyola campus, reigniting long-standing concerns regarding the safety of students living in areas surrounding the university.

"It is a tragedy to see another young life disrupted by the senseless violence that has become far too common on our streets," said a local resident who witnessed the emergency response. "The city needs to stop pretending that these neighborhoods are safe enough to ignore the growing lawlessness."

Loyola University Chicago released a brief statement confirming the victim is a student and noting that the university is cooperating with the Chicago Police Department. They have urged students to remain vigilant and to utilize campus safety resources when traversing the neighborhood at night.

No suspects are currently in custody. The Chicago Police Department’s Area Three detectives are leading the investigation, though they have yet to release a description of any individuals involved.

For many in the community, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the failures in Chicago’s public safety policy. Despite constant claims from city leadership that safety is a priority, residents continue to face the reality of a city where public spaces like beaches and parks are increasingly becoming dangerous zones.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the Area Three Detective Division.
