William Floyd basketball has made history yet again, as both the boys and girls varsity basketball programs earned invitations to compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) State Championship Tournament for the first time ever. Although both teams suffered hard-fought losses in their respective county championship games, both teams received at-large bids to compete in the NYSPHSAA state tournament. Before the season, Section XI received, at random, the opportunity for the county runners-up to receive an at-large bid in the tournament. Now both teams have the opportunity to continue their exceptional seasons with a second chance to win a championship.

The girls varsity basketball team will be playing against Corning-Painted Post High School in the quarterfinal round of the state championship tournament this Sunday, March 15, at 11:45 a.m. in the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton. Information regarding tickets and a potential livestream from the NFHS Network will be posted when it becomes available.

Girls varsity head coach Rich Sinclair commented on Floyd’s at-large bid after Friday’s county championship game, saying, “You don’t get a lot of second chances in life, so we’re very grateful to have that opportunity and we’re not going to take it for granted.” He also expressed how proud he is of the team, highlighting them as a group of exceptionally hard workers. Despite the loss in the county championship game, sophomore Milania Farrow had a night to remember, leading all scorers with 21 points. She has been one of the Colonials’ most prolific point scorers this postseason, and will be looking to have another big game this weekend on the state championship stage.

The boys varsity basketball team will also be playing against Corning-Painted Post High School in the quarterfinal round of the state championship tournament this Sunday, March 15, at 3:15 p.m. in the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton. Information regarding tickets and a potential livestream from the NFHS Network will be posted when it becomes available.

After a heartbreaking, back-and-forth county championship game in which a potential game-tying three to send the game into overtime from senior Sharod Sutton fell just short, the Colonials are extra motivated to make a run at the state title. Head coach Will Slinkosky emphasized the possibility of winning a state title after Saturday’s game in addition to highlighting the grit the Colonials showed after a tough first quarter, saying, “It takes a tough group of kids to take that start and respond the way they did; they just don’t have that quit mentality.” Senior starters Jesse Durham, Sharod Sutton, Ja’Quan Thomas and JJ Smith all finished as double-digit scorers in the county championship game, with Jesse scoring a season-high 18 points to help keep things close.
