A vehicle crashed into a gate near theWhite Housein Washington, DC on Wednesday morning, prompting road closures and a swift response from security personnel. TheUnited States Secret Servicedetained the driver, who is now being questioned by authorities. According to a report by Daily Mail, the vehicle struck gates located at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and H Street. No injuries were reported, and officials said the motive behind the crash remains unclear.
Both the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia and the United States Secret Service are continuing their investigation into the incident.
The crash comes amid heightened security concerns in the United States following a series of violent incidents reported across North America.
Earlier, explosives were reportedly thrown near the residence of the mayor of New York City during a demonstration. Authorities said two suspected militants linked to ISIS had hurled improvised explosive devices at the gathering.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the devices contained nuts, bolts, screws and a hobby fuse, warning that they had the potential to cause severe injuries or fatalities had they detonated.
A day after the first US airstrikes on Iran, another attack unfolded in Austin, Texas, where a gunman opened fire inside a bar, killing three people and injuring 15 others.
Meanwhile, in Toronto, Canada, two shooters targeted the United States Consulate General in Toronto early Tuesday morning.
While the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, Chris Leather, a chief superintendent with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, described the episode as a “national security incident”.
Responding to the shooting, Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, wrote on X that the gunfire directed at the US consulate was a “reprehensible act of violence and an attempt at intimidation,” adding that he was relieved no one had been injured.
Amid the rising threat environment, several senior officials in the administration of Donald Trump, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have reportedly moved to secure military accommodations as a precaution.
