New Delhi:Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday (March 11) slammed the Opposition for bringing the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. While addressing the Lower House, Shah said that questioning the integrity of the Lok Sabha Speaker means questioning democracy. Hitting out at the Opposition, Shah stated that “sadan koi mela nahi hai (Parliament is not a funfair).”
“This Lok Sabha is the biggest panchayat of democracy. When the head of this panchayat is questioned, it raises big questions about the country's entire democratic process. That is why, generally, a no-confidence motion against the Speaker is rarely brought," Shah stated.
“A very strange situation has been created here, when members go to the chamber, an atmosphere is created as if the Speaker’s security itself is under threat. Nothing could be more unfortunate than this. What kind of system do they want? The position of the Speaker has been placed above party lines and is meant to function as a neutral mediator. Yet, questions are now being raised about the very person entrusted with this mediating role.,” Shah added while speaking on the motion brought by the Opposition against Birla.
Shah also stated that For 75 years, both Houses of Parliament have strengthened the foundations of our democracy to great depths, but the Opposition raised a serious question mark over it.

The Union Home Minister said that the Congress has been breaking parliamentary rules since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s era.
“Sadan koi mela nahi hai. Parliament runs according to rules. Everyone speaks according to the rules. No one has the right to disobey Parliament’s rules and speak. To those who say this is happening because of the BJP, let me tell them that these rules were not formed during our time; they have continued since Nehru ji’s era. I am ready to debate that Congress has broken Parliament’s rules many times,” he stated.
‘Opposition Trying To Make Speaker Helpless’:
Shah stated that if anyone gets up and speaks whatever they want, the Speaker will make them sit down. “ Issues are decided beforehand. I am here today to speak on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker; I will not talk about the end of Maoism. If I do that, the Speaker will have to make me sit down. There are so many senior leaders in the Opposition, like Shashi Tharoor and TR Baalu, why do you teach your fellow leaders such behaviour? Are you trying to make the Speaker helpless when you tear papers and throw them at the Chair? How will the session run then? “ he said.
