SAN ANTONIO — A 14-year-old Stevens High School student is recovering. She says she was assaulted by a 17-year-old boy in the cafeteria at school while staff members watched for an extended amount of time. 14-year-old Chanell Martinez says she’s been bullied by the student for years and Northside ISD has been notified. A video of the fight has been shared on social media showing the 14-year-old being dragged and beaten by the 17-year-old student last month. Martinez’s mother, Sylvia Garza says they have filed charges against the boy, and that Northside ISD failed to protect her daughter. “Somebody should’ve stepped in,” Garza said. “Somebody should’ve stopped it immediately. If you’re not going to be stepping in to protect these children, then you shouldn’t be working at the school.” Martinez says the 17-year-old jumped on her after bullying her about her deceased father. She says teachers stood around and watched the attack. “I just was kind of hoping they would pull us away because it was going on for a good while,” Martinez said. “After the second round I was like, dang where are they at?” Martinez says she fought back, going two rounds that lasted between three to five minutes before school staff stepped in. Garza says her daughter’s wounds run deeper than her bruises. She says her daughter has been having nightmares, and just recently started eating normally. “She was in a lot of pain, vomiting, nausea, she couldn’t eat for day,” Garza said. “She was having panic attacks and was very stressed out.”
