The voters have already explained themselves. The question is whether anyone in Washington was listening. Donald Trump returned to the White House promising economic relief, lower prices, stronger borders and an America First foreign policy. Those promises created expectations. And expectations eventually become the standard by which voters judge a president. The economy remained the dominant concern. Families complained about groceries, housing, healthcare and energy costs. The Iran war added another dimension of uncertainty. Tariffs became a source of controversy. Immigration enforcement energized supporters but troubled other voters. The election surveys are hardly mysterious. Nearly nine in ten voters considered the cost of living a major or crucial factor. Roughly two-thirds blamed Trump's policies for contributing to inflation. Many voters questioned the administration's military decisions.
