Rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia are beginning to reshape the aviation industry across Asia, with several airlines increasing ticket prices and fuel surcharges as volatile oil markets push operating costs higher. Air carriers are also grappling with disrupted flight paths and rising demand for alternative routes that avoid the Middle East. These shifts are contributing to higher fares, particularly on long-haul flights to Europe.

The situation has been compounded by a surge in flight cancellations across the region. According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium Ltd., more than 43,000 flights scheduled in and out of the Middle East were cancelled between February 28 and March 10, according to a Bloomberg report.

Airlines Pass Rising Fuel Costs To Passengers

As oil prices fluctuate sharply amid the ongoing Iran conflict, several airlines have begun passing the rising costs on to passengers.

AirAsia, Southeast Asia’s largest low-cost airline, confirmed it has already increased fares and adjusted fuel surcharges, though it has not disclosed specific figures. The airline said it will “dynamically monitor market conditions and react proactively as and when needed.”

India’s flag carrier Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express have also announced phased fuel surcharges across domestic and international routes starting March 12.

Passengers flying within India or to destinations across South Asia, West Asia and the Middle East will see an additional surcharge of Rs 399. Meanwhile, charges on flights to Southeast Asia will rise to $60 from $40, and Africa-bound flights will carry a surcharge of $90 instead of $60.

The increases will expand further from March 18. Surcharges on routes to Europe will climb by $25 to $125, while passengers travelling to North America and Australia will see the levy increase by $50 to $200. Additional changes for flights to Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea are expected to be announced later.

Global Airlines Adjust Pricing Strategies

Airlines outside Asia are also revising pricing strategies as jet fuel costs rise.
