CHICAGO - A University of Illinois Chicago student was arrested after authorities said the student tried to use an incendiary device and stab another student Wednesday afternoon at Student Center East. The incident happened around 1 p.m. on a second-floor walkway between rooms 605 and 606 at Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted St., according to the university. UIC police said a student tried to use an incendiary device in a second-floor hallway before unsuccessfully attempting to stab another student with a knife. Bystanders and campus safety personnel intervened, and the student was detained and taken into custody, police said. No injuries were reported. UIC initially issued an alert around 1 p.m. advising people to avoid the area while police responded. The university later said the area had been secured and there was no ongoing threat to the campus community. Student Center East was evacuated as a precaution and closed while police investigated. Officials have not said what led up to the incident or the relationship between the two students. Student Center East remained closed for the rest of Wednesday evening, with all business operations suspended, according to UIC officials. Employees who work at the center were encouraged to contact their supervisors about work arrangements. All other campus operations continued as scheduled, and no classes were canceled. Student Center East is expected to reopen at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
