Have you been experiencing a burning, tingling, or numb sensation in the outer thigh of late? While it may be nothing, the sensation can also be alarming for your health. Even though it is commonly assumed that the condition may be related to muscle strain or poor circulation, doctors say these symptoms are often linked to a nerve condition called meralgia paresthetica.

Although the condition is usually not dangerous, it can cause significant discomfort and interfere with daily activities if left untreated. “Meralgia paresthetica is a neurological condition that causes tingling, numbness, and burning pain in the outer part of the thigh,” Dr. Manish Chhabria, Senior Consultant, Neurology at Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, told Times Now.

According to Dr. Chhabria, meralgia paresthetica occurs when a sensory nerve called the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve becomes compressed. This nerve runs through the pelvis and supplies sensation to the outer part of the thigh. When it becomes irritated or compressed, it can cause unusual sensations such as burning, tingling, or numbness.

“It is caused by compression of a sensory nerve that carries sensation of the skin over the thigh. It is entrapment of the femoral cutaneous nerve,” he said.

Unlike many other nerve conditions, meralgia paresthetica does not affect muscle strength because the nerve involved only controls sensation, not movement. Some of the common causes include:

People with this condition typically experience symptoms on one side of the thigh. A few common warning signs include:

A few people are more likely to develop meralgia paresthetica as the risk factors include being overweight, pregnancy, wearing heavy belts or tool belts, occupations that involve long periods of standing, and those with metabolic disorders.

Doctors say that mostly middle-aged adults are commonly affected, although the condition can occur at any age. “It can be relieved with conservative measures like medications, wearing looser clothing, sugar control, vitamin supplements, especially B12, weight control,” said Dr. Chhabria. If symptoms do not get better with those measures, surgery may also be needed.
