A 24-year-old Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) student was found dead in Mumbai's Antop Hill area on Monday, in a suspected case of suicide. The woman, identified as Stuti Sonawane, left behind a six-page note in which she accused her boyfriend of mental harassment and humiliation during their relationship. Police later arrested her boyfriend, Fazal Mohammad Khan (31), an insurance agent, from Lower Parel the same day.
According to police, the note describes the mental trauma Sonawane allegedly experienced due to repeated insults and humiliation from her boyfriend. In the note, she wrote about her relationship with her boyfriend, whom she met on a dating app. The two initially became friends and later entered into a relationship that lasted for around one-and-a-half years. She alleged in the note that he often humiliated and insulted her, causing severe emotional distress.
"However, over the course of time the duo realised that their relationship will not last and due to various reasons they cannot go ahead and hence decided to break off and be just friends," a police official said. During the investigation, police found that another man had entered Sonawane's life after the break-up, which reportedly angered Khan and led to an altercation. "In a fit of rage, Khan allegedly used some derogatory words against her, which affected her mentally and which she mentioned in her note," the police said.

Police said Sonawane also mentioned in the note that her friends were aware of the difficulties in her relationship. According to the note, they sometimes joked about her situation and would say, "We don't want to see you in the fridge."
The incident surfaced on Monday morning when Sonawane did not step out of her room until around 11 am. Her parents called out to her but received no response. When they forced open the door, they found her hanging from the ceiling, police said. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police said Sonawane named Khan in the six-page note and accused him of repeated harassment. Following a complaint filed by her parents, Antop Hill police arrested Khan, who lives in Worli. He has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 108 (abetment of suicide). The investigation into the case is ongoing.
