West Valley City, Utah — On October 25, 2026, West Valley City Police officers were dispatched to the Town Place suites at 5473 High Market Drive in West Valley City. Hotel employees reported finding a person inside an out building used for storage. Officers arrived and found the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Sebastian Cerda-Monti, inside the building. Officers identified themselves and gave commands for the suspect to exit the building with his hands empty. The officer continued to issue commands for the suspect to drop what he was holding and exit the building. The door to the building swung open, however, the suspect did not come out. The officer radioed that he observed the suspect holding an object that appeared to be a metal rod. The officer warned that OC spray, commonly known as pepper spray, would be used if the suspect did not exit. The officer then deployed pepper spray into the building and repositioned while continuing to give commands. Video then shows the man exiting the building and running towards the officer while holding and swinging what appeared to be metal rods. An officer discharged his firearm. Officers immediately began providing emergency medical care. Fire personnel arrived and assumed care. The man was later pronounced dead.
