In the video, Putin appears to pause his speech several times, coughing and regaining his breath before continuing to speak. Observers noted that he also briefly touched his throat and slowed his speech during the meeting. While coughing during public appearances is not unusual for any individual, the clip gained significant attention due to the intense scrutiny surrounding the health of global leaders.
“You know, let me say that again, because … my throat’s a bit scratchy. Yes, a bit scratchy. I almost started coughing. I’ve been talking a lot today,” he said, according to theMoscow Times.
Kremlin has till now not issued any statement suggesting that the incident is linked to a medical issue.
For decades, there have been many rumours and speculation about Putin’s health - circulated in international media - including reported strokes, multiple bouts of cancer, and even Parkinson’s disease.
Analysts say the interest is mostly due to his long tenure as the powerful Russian leader and the significant influence he holds in global politics. However, there has been no official confirmation of any serious illness from Russian authorities.
Doctors say coughing in a public setting and while speaking happens for many harmless reasons. Some of the most common causes include dry throat from prolonged speaking, mild respiratory irritation, seasonal allergies, acid reflux, and even dehydration.
In many cases, coughing is also simply your body’s natural reflex to clear the airway.
