A drone struck a major US diplomatic facility in Baghdad in the wee hours of Wednesday, in what is suspected to be a retaliatory attack by pro-Iran militias amid the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran, theWashington Postreported, citing an unidentified security official and an internal US State Department alert.

As per the report, the Iranian drone targeted the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, a key logistical hub used by US diplomats located near Baghdad International Airport and Iraqi military bases.

Six drones were launched towards the compound, out of which Iraqi and US air defences intercepted five, but one drone struck the facility, the report added.

According to the internal alert, the drone hit near a guard tower, prompting personnel at the compound to take cover. Individuals at the site were ordered to “duck and cover," the report said.

It was not immediately clear whether the attack caused any injuries or significant damage. The security official quoted in the report said they were not aware of any casualties.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions operating in the country.

Additionally, drones struck the American Victoria Base at Baghdad airport multiple times within a short period, highlighting escalating threats to US facilities in Iraq.

The incident comes as tensions in the region continue to rise following US and Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28. Iran has since launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US military bases across the Gulf. It has also struck diplomatic missions in Gulf states, as well as hotels and airports and damaged oil infrastructure.

According to Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, the strikes on Iran have killed more than 1,300 civilians. The US Department of Defence on Tuesday said that about 140 American troops have been wounded in Operation Epic Fury against Iran, adding that eight soldiers have been “severely injured."
