Tehran's night sky lit up with dramatic blue flashes early Tuesday after US and Israeli missile strikes allegedly targetedenergy infrastructurein the area. Dramatic videos of the incident emerged on social media platform X, which showed the sky over Karaj, west ofTehran, momentarily turning bright blue following explosions, resembling lightning streaks across the night. Residents in Karaj also reported electricity outages in the aftermath of the strike, according to Iran International.
Users on X analysed that say such flashes are commonly associated with failures in high-voltage electrical systems. When critical infrastructure such as transformers, substations, or power distribution hubs is damaged or explodes, the sudden release of electrical energy can produce powerful blue or white arcs of light, briefly illuminating the surrounding sky.
The strikes come amid escalating tensions in the region following the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in joint US and Israeli strikes on February 28. In retaliation, Iran has targeted Israeli and US assets across several Gulf countries.
The expanding conflict has raised concerns about security in key shipping routes and is already impacting international energy markets, adding to fears of wider economic instability.
The unusual phenomenon quickly drew attention online, with several users speculating about the cause of the striking blue glow. Additional footage from the area shows intense airstrikes producing repeated blue flashes across the skyline.
A user on X claimed that such an effect in the bomb crater is likely from an electrical arc flash or plasma discharge from striking a high-voltage facility.
“Power hub or some type of distribution centre. The blue flash is pretty telling," another X user said.
“That looks like an electrical transformer blowing up," said another.
The developments follow amid an escalating security situation in West Asia, which has resulted in the conflict now being expanded beyond Iran, with Iranian retaliatory strikes--using missiles and drones--targeting USmilitary bases, embassies, and civilian/energy infrastructure in neighbouring Gulf nations, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.
Israeli Defence Forces on Tuesday (local time) conducted a combined strike in Tehran and Tabriz. In a post on X, the IDF said, that the targets struck included a special units command center in Tabriz, an "Imam Hassan" security unit military compound in Tehran, a command center for the security unit responsible for ballistic missile launches and artillery fire, a command center for the Intelligence and General Security Police in Maragheh Province and a large Basij forces compound in Tabriz.
