During a recent Israeli television interview, popular Israeli actress Chelli Goldberg believed the cameras were off during a commercial break and spoke candidly about her growing opposition to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, religious coercion, settler violence, and the war in Gaza. Goldberg says she no longer feels proud to be Israeli, describes the occupation as a root cause of the current conflict, and argues that a minority has a right to fight for its freedom, before discovering that the conversation was broadcast live and expressing shock that her career could be ruined by her frank description of her feelings about Gaza. Jimmy argues that her fear of professional and personal consequences for criticizing Israeli government policies reveals an atmosphere of pressure and intolerance, while suggesting that her remarks reflected years of thought rather than an impulsive outburst. He and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger also criticize the treatment of Palestinians and the use of antisemitism accusations against critics of Israel, while discussing the broader consequences of political conformity and the difficulty of expressing dissent publicly.
