Bank of Korea Gov. Rhee Chang-yong attends a policy meeting at the Government Complex Seoul, Jan. 29. Yonhap
Every time I met with people at the Bank of Korea (BOK) — from low- and mid-level employees, director generals, deputy governors and the senior deputy governor — they all said the same thing about Gov. Rhee Chang-yong.
He is a man with a clear, singular focus on advancing the Korean economy, unmatched in dedication and commitment beyond comprehension.
They also say he is a workaholic who works nonstop. He reportedly has a nickname: “On Fire.”
It reflects his reputation for driving himself relentlessly, as if he’s burning himself out for the Korean economy. To be honest, I thought it was a bit of an extreme form of flattery.
There is also an anecdote from a high-ranking BOK official. According to the story, the governor’s chief of staff once approached him to have him avoid scheduling too many engagements.
The governor had lost 40 percent of his lung functions after a COVID-19 infection, and he needed to look after his health.
However, Rhee reportedly replied bluntly: “Step aside. I have work to do.”
Many high-ranking BOK officials say Rhee always reminds senior staff not to focus on taking credit for policy achievements.
Instead, he urges them to think first about what would be best for the Korean economy.
