Classmates are in mourning and searching for answers after a Fresno High School student collapsed in gym glass and later died.

The 14-year-old boy, identified as Daniel Padilla Jr., suffered a medical emergency in physical education class around lunchtime Monday, according to school district officials.

School staffers summoned emergency responders, who transported the student to a local hospital. The teen died there as doctors sought to save their life.

“The student had a medical emergency at school and sadly died,” said Vanessa Ramirez, crisis communication manager for the Fresno Unified School District.

“I just keep thinking about the student’s mother,” added Ramirez.

Ramirez said the district could not provide a cause of the student’s death.

Calls to local police and emergency services were not immediately returned. The school has provided not additional information on the incident.

Ramirez said the district has provided additional social and emotional supports to the students and staff ofFresnoHigh in the wake of the incident.

In a statement, the district said, “Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and school community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Students expressed shock and concern over the incident.
