A burglar broke into a relative’s Baltimore home, taking two women hostage and shooting a cop before a police sniper killed him in a chaotic Tuesday afternoon scene.
One female hostage jumped out of a window at the Park Heights Avenue property in the northwest of the city, while the unidentified gunman held his weapon to the other woman’s head, police said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference.
A responding Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officer was shot in the leg but was saved when his partner applied a tourniquet, according to police.
The unidentified officer, 36, who has 13 years of experience on the force, was rushed to the hospital, where he is conscious and expected to recover, authorities said.
The suspect, who police said was a relative of the women in the house, was shot dead by a BPD sniper while he was firing shots at officers.
Residents were ordered to avoid the area around the shooting, which took place on the same block as the Agudath Israel of Baltimore orthodox synagogue.
