Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., told reporters Tuesday after being briefed about the expanding war in Iran that there is a real possibility of American troops being deployed into the country, even as the Trump administration has not explained why the war started and its objectives.

“I guess I am most concerned about the threat to American lives of potentially deploying our sons and daughters on the ground in Iran,” he said. “We seem to be on a path toward deploying American troops.”
President Donald Trump told reporters last week that he ordered the illegal war of aggression against Iran because he was convinced that Iran was about to strike.
“It was my opinion that they were going to attack first,” he said.
Trump told a press conference on Monday that the “point of no return” was approaching and he formed his “opinion” about the Iranian risk based on conversations with Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“I thought that they were going to attack us. I thought that they would…if we didn’t do this at the time we did it, I think they had in mind to attack us,” he said.
Iran’s Press TV, citing a highly placed security source,saidthe country is prepared for any scenario.
“We have been preparing ourselves for such a day for 20 years. Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and some other places have been good exercises on the ground for facing such an enemy,” the source said.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s top diplomat, also told NBC News on Sunday: “For the time being, we are capable enough. We have very brave soldiers, who are waiting for any enemy who enters our soil to fight with them, and to kill them and destroy them,” the Press TV report noted.
