The FBI arrested a CIA contractor Friday for allegedly leaking highly classified national defense information to a romantic partner who operated an online publication known for publishing sensitive government intelligence.
Ian A. Brinksman, 42, of Washington, D.C., faces federal charges of unlawfully transmitting national defense information following a search of his residence.
According to a criminal complaint, Brinksman allegedly accessed sensitive intelligence outside his official responsibilities and provided it to an individual who published classified material on Substack.
Attorney General Todd Blanche condemned the alleged breach, emphasizing the Trump administration's commitment to protecting America's national security secrets.
"National defense information is classified to protect the American people from bad actors around the world who wish to do us harm," Blanche said.
Brinksman began working for a federal agency in Virginia in 2020 before becoming a systems integration developer for a government contractor in 2022. He maintained a Top Secret security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information.
