We warned that Zuck would have to come to shareholders with his hand out. This morning, he did.
Meta announced a gargantuan financing plan of up to $95 billion in new equity on Monday, topping even Alphabet's upsized $84.75 billion equity raise from June. Our reaction, roughly 60 seconds after the headline hit:
There it is META TO OFFER $22.5B OF CLASS A COMMON STOCK

"There it is" because we had flagged it a week ago: regular readers will recall that ahead of Meta's earnings (which the company moved up a full week for no obvious reason), we highlighted a question UBS asked out loud while everyone else was asking it quietly:
"Meta reports a week earlier than normal – trying to get ahead of the (cap raise) crowd?" - UBS

Well, the answer was yes. And just as important as the raise itself is what Meta is not doing: selling a jumbo bond. Coming the morning after Elon Musk said that debt markets have "almost entirely shut off access to money" for anyone without substantial non-AI revenue, Meta's decision to fund itself with stock confirms what we have been saying for weeks: the AI debt pipeline has seized up, and even the strongest borrowers in the space would rather dilute shareholders than test it.
