A minor earthquake shook parts of Westchester County in New York on Tuesday morning, briefly rattling buildings and startling residents across nearby areas. The 2.3 magnitude quake struck near Sleepy Hollow at about 10:17 a.m., the United States Geological Survey said. The tremor occurred roughly 4.5 miles (about 7.4 kilometers) below the ground.

Sleepy Hollow is located about 25 miles north of New York City. Authorities said more than 900 people reported feeling the tremor.

Officials said earthquakes of this magnitude are typically weak and rarely cause damage.

"Earthquakes of this size are typically minor and rarely cause damage, but some people in nearby areas like the Bronx may have felt brief shaking. No impacts are expected in NYC," New York City Emergency Management said in a statement.

Residents described feeling a sudden jolt that lasted only a few seconds.

"I was in Pleasantville, at physical therapy. And we had this big bang, and one of the therapists said 'I think that was an earthquake.' And I looked behind and see if there was a tractor trailer, or something there, whatever, because the whole building shook," said Steve Frasene.

Others said they initially thought construction or passing vehicles caused the shaking.

"This morning I was laying in my bed, and I felt my bed shake," said Noemi Rosa. "I was like, was that an earthquake?"

"When I was at home, I felt like somebody was drilling in my house," said Linda Barksdale.

Sarika Singh said the shaking caught her by surprise. "All of a sudden, I feel the ground shaking. And I was like, all right, maybe a truck is passing by, or something like that. And it was only a few seconds, but then, like, after it really hit me, and I was like, oh my God, an earthquake just happened," she said.
