US President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, the widow ofconservative activist Charlie Kirk, to serve on the United States Air Force Academy Board of Visitors. Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative student organisation Turning Point USA, had previously been a member of the board. He attended one of its meetings shortly before he was killed in a shooting on September 10 at a college event in Orem, Utah.

Following his death, Erika Kirk stepped into a leadership role within Turning Point USA and now serves as its chief executive. The organisation says it operates more than 800 chapters on college campuses across the United States and recently hosted an alternative halftime event during the Super Bowl, featuring musician Kid Rock.

The appointment has been welcomed by August Pfluger, the Republican congressman from Texas who chairs the board. Pfluger said he had recommended Erika Kirk for the position months ago and praised Trump’s decision.

“Erika is the right person to step into Charlie’s place on the Board and continue the work he began in inspiring the next generation of service members and strengthening the Academy,” Pfluger said in a statement, adding that he looks forward to working with her to carry forward Charlie Kirk’s legacy.

The Air Force Academy Board of Visitors is a 16-member advisory panel that provides oversight and policy recommendations to the United States Department of Defense regarding matters related to the academy.

The panel includes several members of Congress, such as Jeff Crank, who represents Colorado’s 5th Congressional District, and Tommy Tuberville, a Republican senator from Alabama, alongside Pfluger.

Although the board has not formally announced Erika Kirk’s appointment, her name has been added to the list of members.

During his short time on the board, Charlie Kirk raised concerns about delays in the construction of the academy’s chapel and argued that cadets should be reminded of the principles that set the United States apart from other nations.

“It’s important these cadets understand that we are the greatest nation ever,” he said during a board meeting in August.
