In 1976, Stevie Wonder released the song “Pastime Paradise”[1]. The song is a call out to those who continually dwell in the past “of days long gone behind” and do not live in the present. Then he calls out those who live in a future paradise, one that probably will never see the light of day. I want to use the other connotation of pastime, our recreational pursuits, as a call out to those who escape life by dwelling in their pastimes, things like sports, their phones and so on. There’s nothing wrong with taking pleasure in sports, or partaking in on-line chats and the like, but it should not be used as an escape from the world, living in a world of make-believe instead of the real world.
