IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers resigned from his position with immediate effect on Tuesday (March 10), the airline’s parent company InterGlobe Aviation Limited informed the BSE in a regulatory filing. In his resignation letter, Elbers said: “Due to personal reasons, I herewith submit my resignation from the position of CEO of IndiGo with effect from today.”
Following his departure, InterGlobe Aviation Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will assume interim charge and manage the affairs of the company until further arrangements are made.
In an official statement airline said, "With immediate effect, Pieter Elbers will be stepping down as InterGlobe Aviation Limited’s (IndiGo) CEO. The Board of Directors would like to thank Pieter for his contribution and service to the organisation, and wishes him well in his future endeavours. Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, shall in the interim assume management of the affairs of the airline until such time that the Company announces the arrival of a new leader, which is expected in short order."
“Rahul returns to assume management of the affairs of the airline to strengthen the Company’s Culture, reinforce Operational Excellence and deepen its commitment to delivering exceptional service of care, reliability and professionalism to its customers”, said the Chairman of the Board, Vikram Singh Mehta.
“Having founded and nurtured IndiGo for twenty two years, I feel a deep sense of personal commitment and responsibility towards our nation, and towards the airline’s customers, employees, shareholders and all other stakeholders”, said Rahul Bhatia.
He added, “While placing Culture, Service Excellence and Stakeholder Trust at the forefront of its operations, IndiGo will continue to sharpen its strategic focus on serving India and her people with an airline that is professionally managed, operationally reliable and globally respected."

In an internal email to employees, Rahul Bhatia wrote, "My dear colleagues: I step into my expanded role of managing the affairs of IndiGo with a deep sense of responsibility — not only to the Company's customers and its shareholders, but to every employee who powers this airline. I see the resilience in the effort you put in, and I greatly value your dedication. I remain, as I have always been, fully committed to strengthening our Culture, reinforcing Operational Excellence, and ensuring that we continue to deliver exceptional service and value to our customers. What happened last December should never have taken place .... Our customers didn't deserve it and nor did all of you, especially the frontline employees who bore most of the brunt for no fault of theirs... I wish to place on record my indebtedness to all my colleagues who carried the Company's cross with grace and dignity, and ploughed through sleepless nights to restore IndiGo's operational integrity. You are indeed the living spirit of IndiGo!"
