No-Confidence Motion Against Om Birla: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday took up an opposition resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla from office for his alleged bias towards the ruling party, amid a heated debate on who will preside over the House while the motion is taken up. A total of 10 hours has been allocated for the discussion. The discussion on the no-confidence motion was supposed to take place on Monday, but it did not happen due to the repeated adjournments of the House following protests by the opposition, which was seeking a debate on the West Asia situation.
Congress legislator Mohammad Jawed read out the notice seeking to move the resolution to remove Birla from office. Besides Jawed, the resolution was also moved by MPs K Suresh and Mallu Ravi.

Notably, Birla has not been chairing the House ever since a notice was given by 118 opposition MPs on the motion in the first part of the Budget session.
In order to remove the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Opposition has to manage passing a resolution by an effective majority of the House. This effective majority means that the resolution must be passed by all the then members of the House, which means more than 50 per cent of the total strength of the lower house, excluding any vacant seats.
The motion can be admitted if it has a minimum majority of at least 50 members of the House.
According to the current strength of the Lok Sabha — the 18th Lok Sabha — an effective majority would mean that the Opposition will have to manage at least 272 out of 543 members to be able to pass the no-confidence motion.
But if we look at the numbers, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a current House strength of 293 members, while the Opposition is at 238. Now, looking at the current numbers, it is highly unlikely that the Opposition will be able to get through a no-confidence motion.
This is not the first time when a no-confidence against the chair has been moved by the opposition. Earlier in 2024, the opposition moved a similar motion against then Rajya Sabha chairman and vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar.
In the past, on at least three instances since Independence, no-confidence motion have been moved to remove the speaker.
