SOUR LAKE — A contentious news conference unfolded today over a traffic stop that went viral on video. "Are you telling me that the video shows him handcuffed being choked, while he's handcuffed, being choked, and all that's worth is a damn citation like this?" asked civil rights activist Quanell X. "Do you support that?" That was part of a heated back-and-forth between Quanell X and a man watching a news conference today, during which the civil rights activist and Candice Matthews announced the filing of a federal lawsuit linked to the Sour Lake police interaction with Kendrick Bates. The federal lawsuit is linked to a traffic stop captured on video October 5, showing Sour Lake Police Chief Aaron Burleson and another officer detaining Bates after he pulled over at his home. We're told they said he ran two stop signs. Bates said they were in a pickup truck, with no lights or markings, and he wasn't sure what was going on. This afternoon, the two activists held a news conference in front of the Sour Lake Police Department to announce they have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city, the police chief, and the other officer, on behalf of Bates. They're seeking financial damages. "It's hard for me and my family to go out in public," said Bates, "you know, go out and eat. I go to work and people at the jobsite recognize me. They point me out by name, point my pickup truck out." Bates would not answer our questions about whether he ran the stop signs. Wednesday night, Sour Lake City Council is scheduled to discuss the traffic stop and the police chief in executive session.
