Then he became the No. 2 official at the FBI, and his story changed. Bongino, a former NYPD officer, Secret Service agent, and podcast host, was named FBI Deputy Director by President Trump on February 23, 2025. He was sworn in on March 17, 2025 with no prior FBI experience, in a role that normally goes to a career agent. He lasted 9 months and 17 days, leaving on January 3, 2026. Before joining the bureau, Bongino pushed the theory that Epstein was murdered and swore he would "never let this story go." Once he was inside, he went on Fox News and said Epstein died by suicide. He said the files amounted to "nothing" and called the case a "hot potato." The July 2025 FBI and DOJ memo said there was no client list and no blackmail evidence. Records later showed he was copied on a memo about redacting the Epstein files on his second day in the job. The backlash came from his own side. Judicial Watch said he'd been "taken hostage by the Deep State," and some former fans now call him a "pedo protector." Reports say he clashed with Attorney General Pam Bondi and with FBI staff, and in August 2025 he was made to share his job with Andrew Bailey. Now back on his podcast, Bongino calls his critics "grifters" and "doomers." He's also known for blocking critics on X so often that people he's blocked are planning a "Bongino Block(ed) Party" in Austin this December. In this video, we break down his tenure, his reversals, and the criticism he can't seem to block. Sources: NPR, WSJ, NBC News, CNN, Politico, UPI, Newsweek.
